Archery

Today's fun was archery!

I was the first one to hit the dollar so I won one. Yay!  One dollar closer to affording the first parking ticket, which I received this morning. $46.90 for an expired meter. Lesson learned. Keep quarters in the car for this type of situation.

The Wil Wheaton Project

I made it!  I *may* have taken a wrong freeway at one point, but Siri eventually forgave me and got me to the studios.

Not going to lie, the process of being in the audience was fairly boring.  The ticket said don't bring your cell phone, so I didn't.  I'm glad I didn't because it was good to have a break from it (the addiction hasn't broken yet), but it would have made the time go a little quicker.  I think I got inside the building about 10:45.  The ticket said to arrive by 11 so I was good.  I asked the front desk where to go and then found the lobby of where I was supposed to be.  I gave them my ID and a lady checked my ticket.  Then I waited.

And waited.

And waited.

It probably felt longer because I had nothing to do except watch muted E! shows.  I don't miss cable.  I think about 11:45, we got in line and got bag checked and wanded.  Then we waited some more.

The audience attendant lady told us at 11:30 that it was our last chance to use the bathroom, so of course after everyone had been screened, at least three people left to go to the bathroom.  Good listening, people.  Not a huge deal. They just had to be rescreened when they came back.  Still annoying because they didn't follow directions.

Sometime after 12:15, we finally got in line to go to the studio.  Then we got to wait in a hallway and I realized that so far that day I had had a medium mocha and about six Ritz crackers.  Crap.  We finally got into the studio and sat down.  There were maybe 25-30 people total in the audience.  They kind of told us about how it was going to go and then got started.  They first had us do different reactions.  Oh my god, that was lame.  I didn't participate in most of them.  If you think pre-recorded laughter on TV shows sounds fake, it's because it is.  "Now laugh."  Ughhhh.

Wil came out and did the show.  There are three acts and I think out of the three, he only had to redo two jokes total.  It seemed like he was very nervous when he first came out, but he relaxed throughout.  He's fairly quiet in front of the audience, like he wasn't exactly sure what to say.  The show was really funny and I know I didn't get all the jokes.  After the show was done, he did promos for this week. Then he changed clothes and did promos for next week.  Then he changed clothes and he filmed something (no idea what it's called) that is like hosting one of the movies for SyFy.  He did it for Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark, which sounds like a terribly awesome movie.

Then it was over.  He stood by the door as we walked out and gave everyone a high-five.  I got my parking validated and then left.  I was STARVING.  I think it was only like 2:30 at this point, but I couldn't think of anything else.  So hungry.  I called Kendra on my way home to make her jealous cause I'm a nice sister like that.  It worked.  :-D

Curtains and Tires.

Since Obama may or may not be coming to town today, I decided I should stay home to avoid wanting to die in traffic.  Also, saving money.

I bought my car in January and am slowing learning about it.  I think that's a good thing. I would rather not learn about it when things go wrong, but I haven't actually made an effort to learn about it when there isn't a problem.

Last week, I decided to be a grownup and buy curtains.  Because I'm crazy impulsive, I of course did not take my time to do this and bought the first ones that I really liked.  I do not have a problem with this actually.  I'm very happy with my purchases.  The only problem I've had is that I'm lazy and not handy at all, so I hung them with Command hooks.  They work perfect in my bedroom and in my dining room.  Not so much in my living room or my bathroom.  I finally gave up in my bathroom and stuck the curtain rod in the edges of where my blinds used to be (my blinds are currently in my closet).  It doesn't look as pretty as it did when they were hung higher, but this will save me the nightly heart attack of when the rod falls after I've gone to bed.  Which has happened every.single.night.  The living room problem is because it basically covers the whole wall so I need a long rod.  The rod I bought is just slightly too big for the hooks, so I bought a smaller one.  It hasn't arrived yet, so currently those curtains are in a pile on my floor.  Maybe I should find a better place for them....Anyway, here's a picture of the before and after of my living room, but the after is with the old rod as the new one hasn't come yet.

If you want to see the other curtains, you have to come visit me.  The difference isn't quite as  dramatic as this one.

I was on my way to Home Depot last Friday to get the beautiful curtain rod that is just barely too big when a light turned on on my dashboard.  After consulting my handy owner's manual, the internet, and my father, I figured out that it was the tire pressure light (or Tire Pressure Monitoring System, or TPMS, for the car smart people.  I am now one of those people.  Um no.).  I took my car to the dealership, where I've taken it a few times before.  They very quickly checked my tires and filled the low one up with air.  Easy.  Done.  I went to Home Depot and rewarded myself with tacos from the taco truck I discovered in their parking lot.  (Amazing.  Not East LA Amazing, but still taco Amazing.  I kind of want to go there now, but I told myself I wasn't going to spend money today.)

Anyway, Saturday night was Eric's birthday and was social.  We went to a bar in Santa Monica and it was fun.

I left at 1am and within 5 seconds of driving, that TPMS light came on again. I figured I would hope for the best and drive the 30-45 minutes home anyway because what was I going to do at 1am.  THANKFULLY, I made it home without my tire exploding.  I had to go downtown on Sunday for my Spanish lesson.  I decided instead of driving the 20-25 minutes downtown, I would be adventurous and take the metro.  Then I would only have to drive maybe 10 minutes total.  That would have been great if I had known where there was parking.  So instead, I drove around South Pasadena for probably a good 45 minutes trying to find parking that was longer than 3 hours.  Again, win.  My tire didn't explode (spoiler alert:  my tire never explodes.) and I did find parking that I'm fairly certain was legal.  I got to Spanish and I saw this very pretty ceiling at the 7th Street Metro Station.

I felt very smart and shall be taking the metro downtown again.  That parking situation needs to be researched a little better though.

Now here was the big problem with my tires.  I had a ticket to be in the audience for the Wil Wheaton Project on Monday.  Kendra sent me the link and I figured that while I am a nerd, I don't think I am nearly nerdy enough for this show, but the ticket is free and it will make my sister jealous.  Yes to all of those.  I didn't want to miss the show, but also did not want to be stuck on the side (or the MIDDLE) of the road trying to get to this show.  I was supposed to be there no later than 11.  I wanted to be there around 10 because I really had no idea where I was going and I much prefer to be early.  This tire thing was annoying though, so I woke up ridiculously (not really) early on Monday so I could be at the dealership when it opened at 7:30.  I was ready!  I was there at 7:25.  Although the SIGN says they open at 7:30, and they supposedly do, the waiting room is not open then and no technicians come until 8.  Whatever, fine.  It's California.  I can wait outside.  I was super smart (really) and brought my book.

At 8:30ish, the guy came back and said that I had two nails in my back tire.  They don't fix it there (really, service department?), so I had go to go a tire store.  No charge and they were going to wash my car.  Awesome, free car wash!  While I was waiting for it, I searched tire stores on Yelp.  Yelp is totally my best friend here.  I found a place that had 100 reviews and practically all of them were good.  I read through a bunch of them and I think I found 2 that were bad.  Two.  Out of a ton.  This actually made me fairly suspicious, but none of the other places sounded very good and this place was the closest.  All the good reviews said their prices were reasonable and they were honest.  I asked the dealership guy for a recommendation and he didn't have one.  Just go to the first place I saw.

It's 9:00 by this point and I've decided that I won't be making it to the show.  I have no hope that my car will be done by ten, which is when I wanted to leave to get to the show.  I found this place and talked to the guy a little bit.  I'm completely exhausted because I didn't sleep well the night before and I got up about four hours earlier than I normally do now.  They checked out my car while I walked to the closest Starbucks, which really wasn't that far.  I talked to my dad on the way there and back.  He agreed that I probably wouldn't make the show.  I got back to the shop, waited for maybe 10 minutes, and then the guy came in to talk to me about my car.

He said that he should sell me a new tire, but except for the two nails in it, it was basically in perfect condition so he didn't want to sell me one (um, OK!).  Plugs are cheaper, but patches will make it last a little longer and are safer, so he did that.  Just remember not to rotate that tire to the front.  He asked if I had found the place on Yelp and if I checked in there, he would give me one of the patches for free.  So $25.  DONE.  We talked a little about Yelp and I told him I had been a little suspicious of all the good reviews, but that how he responded to the bad reviews helped.  For those two, it seemed like miscommunication and he tried to explain that in a reply to them.  He said that Yelp even called them earlier in the year, because most tire places get like 20 reviews and he had 100.  Nope, they're all true.  He made me feel really comfortable and not that I was being ripped off at all, like that other place I went to for my Honda (never again...).  I will be going back to this place for sure!

Now it's 9:45 and I think I have time to get to the Wil Wheaton Project!!!!  (Spoiler:  I do.)

Michelle came to visit!!

Michelle and I met in 2004, where we were roommates in London.  We didn't talk at all during the orientation days, but soon became inseparable for the rest of the semester.  We did really well visiting each other about once a year, in Pittsburgh, Vermillion, England, Chicago, and DC.  The last trip was in 2010.

Pittsburgh (2006), London (2006), Chicago (2008), DC (2008)
Vermillion (2006), DC (2010), DC (2008), London (2004)
(I believe the dates are correct....not totally sure.)

Michelle was turning 30 this year and wanted to do something for it.  We discussed going somewhere, but eventually decided to save money and she was going to come to LA.

I picked her up at the airport on Thursday and we went straight to the beach!  I hadn't been to Manhattan Beach yet.  We first stopped at a grocery store and got some food to eat while we were there.  It was pretty great.  We ate, lounged, and went into the ocean.  I've lived here since August and this was the first time I've really been in the ocean since moving here.  I've walked along it and put my feet in, but this was definitely in the ocean.  After we were there for awhile, we drove to my place, got ready for dinner, and went to a Mexican place in Pasadena.  It was really good.  Not like East LA tacos, but still good.  Nothing is like East LA tacos.

Friday, we started the day at the Getty Center.  I had been there twice before--once on my own in January and once in March with Dad.  It's a great place to go.  It was pretty hazy but the views are amazing.  Each time I've gone, there have been different exhibits so that's been good.  We ate lunch there, which I only mention because I had a PB&J sandwich and it was delicious and actually not crazy overpriced.  We were there for a few hours.  On our way home, we stopped in Hollywood to see the Hollywood sign.  So many people.  It's cheesy, but still fun to see.  I think we got home about 4:30 and got ready for FIREWORKS!  I really didn't want to drive so we tried out using the company UBER.  It was awesome.  It's an app that you can request rides and it automatically is paid for through the card you put with your profile, tip included.  It was so convenient.  I had never been to the Rose Bowl again, but both the driver and Michelle kept asking me for directions.  I just wanted to see fireworks!

There were so many people!  We walked around the outside for a little bit and then went into the stadium.  It was quite confusing because I paid for reserved seats with backs instead of general admission benches.  When we got in there, they said we could sit anywhere in our section.  Ok cool.  We even went back and double checked that it's what they meant.  It was, at least until about 8:30, when people starting coming over to where we were saying that "we" (not us specifically) were in their seats.  Definite miscommunication with the Rose Bowl staff on that one.  There were two different performers that we saw.  The first was teenage pop star Ian Thomas or something.  Ehhhhhhh.  I like pop music and this was terrible.  The second group was awesome.  The Liverpool Legends and they were picked by Louise Harrison, George's brother.  It was quite funny to me that they had an English group performing for a 4th of July celebration.

Onto the fireworks.  BEST FIREWORKS I'VE EVER SEEN.  I thought that about London.  These were better.  The last time I saw 4th of July fireworks was in 2011 in Rapid City and they were blocked by trees.  So sad because I love fireworks.  I took videos of these and just stared at them in awe.  So so so so so so so good.

After the fireworks, we walked back towards Old Town Pasadena to get away from the people.  We tried Uber again, but there weren't any cars available.  While we were debating on what to do, Michelle was able to hail a cab.  It worked out wonderfully.

I'm watching amazing fireworks and I cannot believe it

Saturday was probably the most awesome day.  The one thing Michelle really wanted to do was take a surfing lesson.  I wanted to but was definitely nervous about it.  I had booked one with a company I found on yelp and it was great.  We went to Venice Beach early, found some breakfast, and sunscreened up.  The lesson was at 12:15 and 90 minutes long.  It was the perfect amount of time.  They gave us wetsuits and boards for the lesson.  We practiced on the beach for about 10 minutes and then got into the water.  It was just the two of us with the instructor (Princeton?).  It was so much fun.  I was better at it than I thought I was going to be.  It was definitely harder than it looks and I fell a lot, but I also stood all the way up a few times.  Some of the waves were brutal.  I lost my hair tie in one of the waves that made me do a few somersaults under the water.  I got hit by my board pretty hard twice--once in the head and once in the shoulder.  I have some nice bruises, but I'm kind of sad that the one on my shoulder is invisible because it hurt like a bitch.

After surfing, it was pretty relaxed.  We went to get food, shopped on the Venice boardwalk, and then sat on the beach and read for a little bit.  The plan was to go to Griffith Observatory after that.  We tried, but the traffic was CRAZY.  Apparently they have monthly star parties and this was the night for it.  Ugh, it sucked and we were exhausted, so after being in traffic for about a half hour, we turned around and went home.  That was a good choice.

Before....Just a little nervous

After.  So very happy!

Sunday was Michelle's 30th birthday!  We had lunch with her great aunt and her cousins.  Then we went to her cousin's house and swam in their pool for awhile.  They were very welcoming and it was very relaxing.  Mish wanted to go out to dinner for her birthday, so I took her to the pizza place that Dad and I went to before the Book of Mormon.  I went one other time by myself.  So good.  Fancy pizza.  Nice place, but not crazy expensive.  We got drinks and a pizza each and then split the baked goat cheese and brussel sprouts.  I am 99% sure that I had never had brussel sprouts before in my entire life and these were delicious.  OMG so good I want them now.  They were charred with balsamic with Parmesan and possibly something else.  I wish I had some now.  I had told the waitress that it was Michelle's birthday and at the end, she brought us this caramel butterscotch dessert.  It was so sweet of her and also ridiculously good.  Kind of like the brussel sprouts, I can taste it now.

After dinner, we went to the observatory again.  There was still a lot of traffic but we made it.  I hate parking there.  Absolutely hate it.  But we saw the views and saw the inside a little and it was all good.

Downtown at night
Sadly, Monday was the last day.  Peri, Michelle's cousin, works at Warner Brothers and invited us to come there before Mish had to go to the airport.  That was the plan until we got up.  We had both thought about it and decided that we wouldn't have enough to really enjoy it and would just feel rushed.  What we did instead I think was better.  It gave us time to slow down, relax, and see a few last sights.  First was breakfast.  I found a few options in Pasadena and found a crepe place.  It turned out to be fairly cheap and was adorable.  The crepes were amazing.  Michelle got a savory one with spinach, egg, red pepper, and something else I think.  I got a peanut butter and jelly one.  Yum.  After that, we did a little stalking and found the Walsh house from Beverly Hills, 90210.  We were super cheesy and took pictures.  The people driving by on the street either had no idea what we were doing and thought we were crazy, or knew what we were doing and thought we were crazy....mostly because I thought we were crazy, but I'm glad we did it.  We had a little more time so we went to the outside of the Norton Simon Museum.  They have some Rodin sculptures outside and we both love Rodin.  It was nice and relaxing way to end the trip.  That was the last thing we did and then I took her to the airport.

Sad that she's leaving
I'm so glad she came.  It was a great way to celebrate her 30th birthday and our 10th friendiversary.
